Change multiple items at once with lasso
Using the web app, you can batch-edit several items at once. Here's how:
Select the items to change
- Click to the top-left of the first task you want to edit
- Hold the mouse and drag until you've selected the last task you want to edit
- You'll notice that the dots on the left side of the selected tasks will be highlighted in grey
- Press and hold CTRL or COMMAND to add another group of items to the selection
Edit the selected items
Move items
- Change the state or parent list by dragging your items to another action list, project, or reference list
- You can also right-click the items and select the desired destination from the context menu
Modify properties
You can also right-click the items and select the desired attributes from the context menu:
- Tags: Add or remove tags from all selected items
- Time: Set time estimates for multiple items
- Energy: Assign energy levels to multiple items
- Due date: Set the same due date for multiple items
- Action state: Change the state (Next, Waiting, Scheduled, etc.) for multiple items
See the total estimated time
Lasso multiple items, right-click, and you'll see the total amount of time to complete the selected items at the top of the context menu. This is helpful for:
- Sprint planning: Understanding how much work you've selected
- Time blocking: Knowing how long a group of tasks will take
- Workload assessment: Seeing if you've overcommitted
Advanced lasso techniques
Multiple selections
- Hold CTRL/CMD while lassoing to select multiple separate groups
- This allows you to batch-edit items that aren't adjacent in the list
Cross-list selection
- You can select items across different views if they appear in the same list
- Useful when filtering shows items from different contexts
Common batch editing scenarios
Weekly review cleanup
- Select overdue items and reschedule them all at once
- Move completed items to appropriate lists
- Update energy levels for the upcoming week
Project management
- Add the same due date to all items in a project phase
- Assign the same contact to multiple delegation items
- Update time estimates for similar tasks
Context switching
- Add location tags to groups of errands
- Set energy levels for different types of work
- Schedule related items for the same time block
Best practices
- Be selective: Only select items that truly need the same changes
- Review first: Check what's selected before making bulk changes
- Use filters: Filter your view first to make selection easier
- Start small: Practice with a few items before doing large batch operations
